But, because we didn’t know, we didn’t get to write a finale. “When we found out we weren’t coming back,” says West, “we were able to edit an ending to the best of our abilities. With Shrill the show having now come to a close after only three seasons, and, while the reasons for this aren’t entirely clear, Bryant says that it has been one of the most creatively satisfying experiences of her life, and West is happy with its realistic, no bow-tied ending. And though West insists she’s in a respite, she’s pitching a couple TV shows, has written an episode of a Shondaland anthology, Notes on Love, and is working on a memoir follow-up to Shrill. Shrill the book came out five years ago, was a New York Times best-seller, was named a best book of the year by NPR, Esquire, the Los Angeles Times, and Newsweek, and won the Stranger Genius Award.
